Our series on iconic film locations has so far featured famous names such as Alcatraz and Death Valley. Next up – Lone Pine! OK, you may never have heard of it, but the chances are you've seen it dozens of times on screen. Getting on for 500 movies have been shot there, including big-budget blockbusters Iron Man and Gladiator, plus a couple of Star Trek outings. It's been a favourite with filmmakers for nearly a century, and is best known for providing imposing backdrops for classic westerns.

Andy Murray had a good run at the China Open in Beijing this week as he stepped up his comeback after surgery. He reached the quarter-finals before being knocked out by world number five Dominic Thiem. The picture above was taken during an earlier appearance at the tournament, back in 2014, when we watched Murray play Novak Djokovic. Murray won the tournament two years later. During another match there in 2014, the organisers closed the roof of the mighty centre court stadium because of rain, but not quickly enough – staff had to mop the playing surface with lengths of cloth.

Older readers will remember that British Airways once described itself as “the world’s favourite airline”. Those days seem longer ago than ever with yesterday’s news that 500,000 of its customers have been given the go-ahead by a judge to sue the carrier over a cybersecurity breach. Last month’s strikes by BA pilots did little to boost its popularity. In September, BA was named among the bottom fifth of major global airlines in a report by reputation management company Alva. It was ranked 55th out of 65 airlines, and Alva said it risked becoming an “industry pariah”. BA is 19th on the 2019 list of the world’s top airlines compiled by Skytrax, which is based on the views of customers. The top 10 is dominated by Asia-Pacific and Middle East carriers – Lufthansa, at number nine, is the only company from outside those regions that features.

Qatar Airways is top, and the list includes serial award winners Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific and Emirates. China’s Hainan Airlines is seventh. It seems as good an indicator as any of the way the industry has gone, with flag-carrier warhorses such as BA left trailing in the wake of efficient, service-focused rivals from the Middle East and Asia.
