Attention movie fans – next week we'll be featuring locations where some of the biggest films and TV shows were shot. California, as the home of the US film industry, is packed with places that have attracted directors looking for striking, unique or iconic settings for their work. We'll start with Alcatraz (above), and add further locations through the week.

The Hong Kong protests are taking their toll on the tourist industry, with arrivals down nearly 40 percent from the same time last year, according to a government minister. It's a difficult one. Some people say it's easy to stay safe and avoid the protests as they are publicised in advance, and that is true. But members of my family who visited in April say they would not come now. We feel we wouldn't want to pay a lot of money (Hong Kong is an expensive city) to go somewhere with all that happening in the background.

Great news for rugby fans heading there for the World Cup, which starts next week – beer is a (relative) bargain there! A new report from the Finder comparison site says the average price of a pint in Japan is £3.64 ($4.55) – down 9 percent from 2017. That compares to £5.18 in the UK, £4.66 in Australia, and £5.57 in New Zealand. However, there’s bad news for football supporters looking forward to the 2022 World Cup – the dearest country of all is Qatar, where a pint costs a whopping £10.30.

Still on Japan, this week we ran a post about Tsukiji Fish Market, a Tokyo institution and tourist magnet that closed last year. Though the sprawling wholesale site, where prize tuna changed hands for a million dollars or more, is gone, the shops and restaurants of the "outer market" are still there.
